Chautauqua Modern: A Southwestern Home Reimagined

Chautauqua Modern: A Southwestern Home Reimagined

Framed by Boulder’s Chautauqua backdrop, this home tells a story of renewal. Once defined by rustic wood and ornate detail, it’s now open, balanced, and full of light. Completed in the summer of 2024, the remodel reflects a clear vision shared between Modern Homestead and Ute Vandenberghe of UV Designs: create calm through clarity and let the home breathe again.

A New Perspective on the Main Floor

The transformation began at the heart of the home. A major structural header and beam were removed to connect the kitchen and living areas, allowing natural light to move freely through the main floor. What was once closed and compartmentalized now feels expansive and cohesive.

Stone surfaces by Don’s Custom Countertops, fabricated in Vadara Quartz Calacatta Fresco, introduce a crisp white foundation with soft gray veining that reflects the light and brightens the entire space. The pairing of Sherwin-Williams Repose Gray on the perimeter cabinetry and Urane Bronze on the island brings depth and warmth, creating a sophisticated and welcoming atmosphere.

Every finish was chosen for balance and simplicity. Sleek, built-in appliances by Monogram blend seamlessly into the cabinetry, while a discreet Zephyr hood and Miele dishwasher maintain clean sight lines.

Soft lighting highlights the texture of the quartz, and concealed outlets and docking drawers maintain visual simplicity. The result is a kitchen that feels sculptural yet lived-in — crafted for connection and a comfortable heart of the home.

The Primary Bathroom: Light, Form, and Flow

The original bathroom reflected its era: heavy trim, dark wood, and glass block windows that muted natural light. The remodel redefined it as a tranquil retreat centered around proportion, material, and light.

The new design introduces a dual-sink vanity, a walk-in shower, and a connected closet that mirror the same calm material palette found throughout the home. The custom vanity, finished in a soft neutral tone, is topped with Vadara Quartz Sereno Bianco, adding a luminous gray warmth that complements the room’s layered textures and light. Bedrosians Tile & Stone brings quiet dimension across the shower and walls, catching the natural light that shifts throughout the day.

Every element works together contributing to a feeling of ease and transforming the space into a personal retreat.

Primary Closet + Laundry: Function in Form

Adjacent to the primary bathroom, the laundry area was designed as an integrated walk-in closet to create a space where purpose and daily routine meet quiet sophistication.

The light gray quartz countertop, following the lead set in the primary bath, adds cohesion and calm, maintaining the home’s soft, modern rhythm. A Luxart ring light anchors the space overhead, its soft circular glow adding warmth and balance to the room’s clean geometry.

Light cabinetry softens the room’s edges and offers ample storage, while the warmth of the wood flooring ties it back to the rest of the home. This isn’t a room meant to hide away, but to elevate the everyday — where function and finish meet in perfect harmony.

The Powder Bath: Small Space, Bold Design

If the primary bath whispers calm, the powder bath offers quiet contrast. Compact but full of personality, this space layers mood and light in a way that feels both grounded and refined.

A slim mirror above the vanity reflects the window opposite it, filling the room with softened daylight and creating the illusion of more space. Minimalist fixtures give the room a sculptural quality — refined and understated rather than ornate.

The powder bath proves that simplicity, when done thoughtfully, can make one of the smallest spaces in the home among the most memorable.

The Fireplace: A Bold Focal Point

In the main living area, the fireplace became both anchor and art. The flat surround was replaced with striking veined stone set against a Sherwin-Williams Iron Ore accent wall, allowing the stone’s natural pattern to become the focal point of the room. Subtle sconces wash light across its surface, emphasizing the depth and variation in the material.

The design invites pause and ties together the warmth of the wood floors, the softness of the kitchen palette, and the openness of the floor plan. It’s both statement and balance — a center of gravity for the home.

Rebuilding with Intention

This project reached far beyond surface updates. Structural walls were reworked on the upper level, and new flooring throughout the main floor unified the home’s tone and flow. Every decision — from material to proportion — was made to align architecture and atmosphere.

From the kitchen to bath to hearth, this home became a reflection of balance: light against texture, warmth against simplicity, history against renewal. The home now feels effortless and enduring, grounded in the belief that great design doesn’t compete for attention — it welcomes you in.
